In the paper industry today, there is a pronounced trend towards more and more blending of different types of pulp. There is a great interest in blending long and short libered pulps. In this work, a softwood (Pinus caribaea var. caribaea) and a hardwood (Eucalyptus saligna) kraft pulps were mixed after beating. Some of the properties of the blended pulp sheets improved, such as teor strength, while other decreased-burst and tensile strengths. Blending of fibers with different characteristics seems to offer great possibilities of producing tailor-made papers, according to their requirements. This applies not only to softwood-hardwood blends, but also to blends of pulps from the same origin, but differently processed. |
